Decriminalize magic mushrooms(psilocybin) in Maine

The Issue

Magic mushrooms (psilocybin) have shown tremendous potential in the field of mental health. Recent studies from institutions like Johns Hopkins University and New York University have demonstrated psilocybin's effectiveness in treating several conditions (depression, PTSD, and addiction, to name a few). The therapeutic benefits are numerous and could offer relief to thousands of Mainers.

Despite their potential, psilocybin mushrooms remain classified as a Schedule I substance under the Controlled Substances Act, meaning they are deemed to have no medical benefit and a high potential for abuse. This classification ignores the growing body of scientific evidence supporting their medicinal use and inhibits further research and therapeutic applications.

In 2019, Denver, Colorado, became the first U.S. city to decriminalize magic mushrooms, followed by other cities like Oakland and Santa Cruz in California. These cities have reported no significant adverse effects to public safety, but have instead noted an increase in mental health awareness and education.

Maine has a history of being at the forefront of progressive policies, and it’s time for us to lead the way in mental health reform. By decriminalizing psilocybin mushrooms, we can change the lives of countless individuals by promoting research that can lead to improved treatment options.

We urge the Maine State Legislature to consider the scientific evidence and follow the lead of other cities and states in decriminalizing magic mushrooms. Doing so will no doubt have a positive effect on our residents.
