The Issue

Dear Governor Brian Kemp,

Subject: Decriminalization of Natural Psychedelic Treatment for Mental Health

We hope this letter finds you well and in good health. We are writing to you as concerned citizens of the great state of Georgia to request your support for the decriminalization of natural psychedelic treatments for mental health conditions, particularly as they relate to veterans struggling with depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

The mental health crisis among our veterans is an issue that deserves our utmost attention. Nationally and here in Georgia, we are witnessing a devastating rate of suicide among our veterans, often attributed to the invisible wounds of PTSD. According to the latest data from the Department of Veterans Affairs, approximately 22 veterans take their own lives each day in the United States, a heartbreaking statistic that highlights the urgent need for alternative treatments.

Depression, anxiety, and PTSD are silent killers that afflict millions of people worldwide. The World Health Organization estimates that over 300 million people globally suffer from depression, and the numbers are rising. The effects of these conditions can be debilitating, leading to a diminished quality of life and, in some cases, tragic outcomes. Traditional medications have often failed to provide relief, and their side effects can be overwhelming.

This is where natural psychedelic treatments, such as psilocybin and Ayahuasca, have shown great promise. These substances have been shown to restore mental, emotional, and psychological health in individuals suffering from depression, anxiety, and PTSD. What sets them apart from traditional medication is their non-addictive nature and the lack of harmful consequences typically associated with street drugs like opioids.

Decriminalizing plant medicine would not only provide individuals with a safe and effective alternative for healing but also contribute to combating the devastating epidemic of substance use disorders. Our nation is grappling with an alarming death rate due to addiction, and we must explore innovative solutions to address this crisis.

Furthermore, end-of-life anxiety is a harrowing experience that often arises without solace. Plant medicine has the potential to offer comfort and peace to those facing this difficult phase of life.

We urge and implore you, Governor Kemp, to support the decriminalization of natural psychedelic treatments for mental health conditions in Georgia. By doing so, you would be providing our veterans and all Georgians with a much-needed lifeline to restore their mental and emotional well-being. It's time we embrace a holistic approach to mental health care and acknowledge the transformative power of these substances in the right therapeutic settings.

We thank you for your attention to this critical matter and look forward to hearing about your stance on this issue. Your support could change countless lives and contribute to a healthier and more compassionate Georgia.

Sincerely,
