Decrease student workload in MCPS
Decrease student workload in MCPS
The Issue
As a student in Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS), I have seen firsthand the overwhelming amount of work that is assigned to us on a daily basis. This isn’t just hurting my ability to learn effectively but also significantly affecting my mental health and that of my peers. The homework load consumes our evenings and weekends, leaving little time for family, extracurricular activities, or simply resting. This is a shared struggle that my friends and I, along with countless other students, face every single day.
High volumes of homework and continuous assessments are not conducive to effective learning. According to a study conducted by Stanford University, excessive homework is linked to high stress and physical health problems among students. Students are spending hours on assignments and studying every night, sometimes until the late hours, which compromises their sleep—a critical factor for mental health and cognitive function.
We are calling upon MCPS to recognize the importance of this issue and to implement solutions that will allow students to thrive, not just survive. By decreasing the overall workload, schools can create a more balanced academic environment that encourages learning without the added stress. Instituting policies on homework limits and providing optional study resources rather than mandatory ones could be the first steps.
Furthermore, education systems across the world have successfully integrated innovative educational techniques that focus on quality rather than quantity. Finland, known for its high-performing education system, assigns very minimal homework, focusing instead on more interactive and engaging forms of learning. MCPS has the potential to adopt similar approaches that encourage creativity and critical thinking while reducing the stress burden on students.
Join us in this movement to create a healthier and more effective learning environment for all students in MCPS. Stand with us to bring this critical change that can positively influence thousands of students’ lives.
Please sign this petition to urge MCPS to take action and decrease student workload, thereby enriching the educational experience and supporting student well-being.
