Decrease Exorbitant Property Taxes on Long Island

The Issue

The story of my elder parents manifests the issue pervasive across Long Island; retired, with no mortgage outstanding, yet still struggling under the weight of unreasonably high property taxes. This unbearable financial pressure is a direct result of exorbitant property taxes that are pushing hardworking citizens, like my parents, to the brink.

But this is not just the story of my parents—it's the narrative of many Long Islanders. Young people, full of potential and ready to contribute to our communities, are deterred by the prospect of these crippling taxes and are leaving Long Island, causing an alarming brain-drain.

Given that Long Island's property taxes are among the highest in the nation, with Nassau and Suffolk County homeowners paying an average of more than $11,000 annually, immediate action is required. This figure far outstrips the $3,500 national average, placing an undue burden on our locals [source: U.S. Census Bureau].

The pressing need is not just to provide relief for elder retirees like my parents, who have paid their dues to society, but also to ensure a hospitable and flourishing environment for the young minds that are Long Island's future.

We call upon the local and state government to reevaluate and lower the property taxes in Long Island, bringing them in line with the national average, and establishing a climate where people of all ages can live comfortably and without the fear of such a growing expense.

Lend your voice to this cry for fair taxation. Together, we can make a difference. Sign the petition.
