The Mullaperiyar Dam, over 120 years old, poses a great risk to the safety and livelihood of millions residing in the districts of Kerala downstream. Despite numerous reports and studies pointing to the decrepit condition of the dam and its imminent threat, no decisive action has been taken yet. The dam, built during the British era with a projected lifespan of 50 years, has outlived its safety duration by more than 70 years. The 2011 report of the Empowered Committee on Mullaperiyar Dam highlighted the necessary measures to prevent a disaster but were largely ignored. Moreover, the dam is situated in a seismically active zone increasing the threat multifold. We urge the concerned authorities to decommission the Mullaperiyar Dam as early as possible controlling the high-risk factors it imposes. Swift action can mitigate the risk of a devastating flood, saving the ecological treasure that Kerala is, and safeguarding the lives and property of the people.
