Declare King Von's Childhood Home a Historic Landmark and Abolish Modern-Day Slavery in Chicago
The Issue
My father, King Von, was a guardian angel for the city streets of Chicago until his non-gang related death in the early September of 2001. His legacy is ingrained in the fabrics of our community.
After his many years of dedicated service to our city, King Von's childhood home remains a beacon of hope and a monument of resilience for Chicago's youth. Therefore, it is crucial that we request the City Council to officially declare King Von's childhood home a historic and sacred ground. It's not just about preserving bricks and mortar but his lifelong commitment to uplift our community.
Furthermore, despite the Thirteenth Amendment abolishing slavery centuries ago, forms of modern-day slavery are still present in many corners of our society, including Chicago. A study by the Global Slavery Index estimates that there are over 403,000 people living in conditions of modern slavery in the United States today. It's time that we address this at a local level and push for legislation to make possession of slaves in any form, illegal in Chicago.
Truly honoring my father’s legacy means continuing to fight for what he believed in — a safe, inclusive, and equitable community. We ask for your help to keep King Von's spirit alive and to say no to modern-day slavery in our city. Please, sign this petition.
