In the United Kingdom, religious holidays such as Christmas and Easter are recognized as bank holidays. However, two of the most important religious holidays for Muslims - Eid ul Fitr and Eid'ul Adha - are not granted this status. This discrepancy means that Muslims often have to use their annual leave to observe these significant events, which can be declined based on service needs. This is not equitable treatment for all faith groups in our diverse society. According to the 2011 Census, there were approximately 2.7 million Muslims living in England and Wales (Office for National Statistics), making Islam the second largest religion in the country. By declaring both Eids as bank holidays, we would be acknowledging and respecting this substantial portion of our population's cultural heritage and belief system. It's time we ensure fairness by recognizing these important Islamic festivals just like we do with other religions' key dates.
