The Devastation in Sivasagar, Jorhat and Charaideo.

The latest floods in Upper Assam have left the districts of Sivasagar, Jorhat, and Charaideo facing one of the worst humanitarian crises in recent years. Days of relentless rainfall, overflowing rivers, and breached embankments submerged villages, agricultural land, roads, schools, and public infrastructure, forcing thousands of families to abandon their homes.

In Sivasagar, the Desang River in Nazira Dikhow River rose above its highest recorded flood level from 1998, inundating large areas and displacing thousands of residents. Reports describe families trapped by floodwaters, homes completely submerged, and rescue teams working continuously to evacuate people to safer locations.

Charaideo, particularly the Sonari region, suffered extensive destruction as floodwaters entered villages, damaged homes, and disrupted livelihoods. The district recorded multiple flood-related fatalities, while many residents struggled without adequate food, clean drinking water, electricity, or medical assistance.

In Jorhat, rising water levels flooded residential areas, damaged roads and bridges, and severely affected transportation and agriculture. Many people were forced to take shelter in relief camps while local authorities and volunteers continued rescue and relief operations.

Across Assam, the disaster has affected hundreds of thousands of people, with Sivasagar and Charaideo among the worst-hit districts. The repeated destruction of lives, livelihoods, crops, schools, and public infrastructure demonstrates that these are not isolated emergencies but recurring disasters that require sustained national attention and long-term solutions.

The people of Assam cannot rebuild their lives year after year without stronger support. We therefore urge the Government of India to declare the recurring floods in Assam a National Disaster and implement comprehensive measures for permanent flood management, rehabilitation, and climate resilience.

Every year, Assam faces one of the most devastating flood disasters in the country. Millions of people are affected as homes are destroyed, crops are submerged, roads and bridges are washed away, schools and healthcare services are disrupted, and countless families lose their livelihoods.

Despite repeated flooding year after year, the scale of the disaster continues to place an enormous burden on the people of Assam. The recurring destruction affects farmers, daily wage earners, students, small businesses, and vulnerable communities. Many families are displaced for weeks or months and struggle to rebuild their lives.

We, the undersigned citizens, respectfully urge the Government of India to:

Declare the recurring floods in Assam a National Disaster.
Provide enhanced financial assistance for relief, rehabilitation, and reconstruction.
Strengthen flood control infrastructure, including embankments, drainage systems, and river management.
Support long-term rehabilitation programmes for affected families.
Invest in modern flood forecasting, early warning systems, and climate resilience to reduce future losses.
Assam is an integral part of India, and its people deserve sustained national support to address this recurring humanitarian crisis. A stronger national response can help protect lives, livelihoods, and the state's future development.
