The Issue

The toxic drug crisis impacts everyone in Manitoba. As a resident deeply concerned about the devastating effects of illicit drugs in our community, I urge the Chief Medical Officer of Manitoba to declare a public health emergency in response to the alarming rise in drug-related deaths, overdoses, and substance use related harms.

Manitoba is witnessing a sharp increase in substance use, which has led to a significant surge in fatal overdoses. According to provincial reports, deaths related to opioid overdoses have skyrocketed in recent years, affecting individuals and families across all demographics. This crisis is not confined to certain areas; it has permeated every part of our province.

The consequences of inaction are severe. More lives are at stake with each passing day. Families lose loved ones, communities face the burden of healthcare and emergency services, and the economic impacts are profound. Just this past week in Winnnipeg alone we lost 15 individuals to the toxic drug supply.  Without immediate intervention, the situation will only worsen, leaving a trail of devastation in its wake.

Declaring a public health emergency is a crucial step towards mobilizing resources and government attention to address the issue effectively.  We hope it will open doors to increased funding for addiction services, harm reduction programs, and public education campaigns to prevent drug use. Moreover, it would enable greater coordination between healthcare providers, people who use substances, and community organizations to implement comprehensive strategies to combat this crisis.

By recognizing this dire situation as a public health emergency, we also raise awareness and engage the entire community in a unified effort to save lives. This declaration would underscore the urgency and the need for immediate action, signaling that Manitoba is committed to protecting its residents from this growing threat.

I urge everyone who shares this concern to sign this petition. Together, we can advocate for the necessary steps to combat this urgent public health crisis effectively. Please join me in calling on the Chief Medical Officer of Manitoba to declare a public health emergency and make a tangible commitment to safeguarding the health and well-being of all Manitobans.
