With the demise of the traditional public phone box, finding another 21st century use can only be good for the community. A defibrillator can and does save lives. Having one centrally located in a village landmark can only be of benefit to the community. 

Public access defibrillators (PADs) are a briefcase sized box on the wall containing a PAD. It's there for anyone to use on someone in cardiac arrest.

They are simple and safe. The machine gives clear spoken instructions. Although they don't all look the same, they all function in broadly the same way.

Once in position, the defibrillator detects the heart's rhythm. It won't deliver a shock unless one is needed.

After a cardiac arrest, every minute without CPR and defibrillation reduces someone's chance of survival by 10 per cent.
