December Queue for MicroBusiness Applicants

The Issue

Dear Trusted Members of the New York Cannabis Control Board,

We are writing to you today as MicroBusiness licensed operators and also aspiring MicroBusiness operators in response to your recent decision to prematurely end the December queue for the issuance of more licenses.

We strongly urge the Board to reconsider this decision, as it will have significant negative consequences on the growth and development of the New York cannabis industry, particularly for small operators and minority entrepreneurs who rely on these opportunities.

MicroBusinesses are integral to the vision of a diverse, equitable, and inclusive cannabis market in New York. By halting the issuance of new licenses, you are effectively stalling the progress of countless qualified applicants who have invested significant time, resources, and effort into navigating the grueling application process. Many of these applicants are aspiring small business owners, often from historically marginalized communities who see the micro-business license as an essential path to entry into this emerging industry.

Further, we want to emphasize that we welcome competition in the market. We are not afraid of potential over-saturation; rather, we believe in the principle of equal opportunity. The success of the market depends on diverse & well-prepared operators who can contribute to its growth, bring innovation, and create a more vibrant & competitive ecosystem.

Again, please reconsider the status of the December queue and/or help find a meaningful solution for those who are stuck in limbo. Furthermore, we encourage ALL pending applicants statewide to fight for their right for a timely & meaningful review of their application.
