The Issue

As a nursing student at Baton Rouge Community College (BRCC), my academic journey has been deeply personal and transformative. I have shared countless hours with my cohort, studying, supporting each other, and growing together to achieve our dream of becoming healthcare professionals. **Waiting until May 2027 to participate in commencement ceremonies with a different graduating class does not fully honor the journey and accomplishments we have achieved as a unified cohort.**

The absence of a Fall December 2026 commencement ceremony for nursing students at BRCC imposes unnecessary stress and disappointment. Commencement is a unique and cherished celebration, symbolizing the culmination of our hard work and dedication. For many of us, the ability to participate in the ceremony with those we've formed close bonds with is as vital as the degree itself.

According to the U.S. Department of Education, graduation ceremonies significantly contribute to students' overall educational experience, providing a sense of closure and achievement. The National Center for Education Statistics indicates that over 60% of colleges hold mid-year ceremonies, recognizing the importance of accommodating students who complete their degrees in non-traditional timelines.

Offering a December commencement ceremony is not only about celebrating achievements but also about equity and inclusivity. Numerous students complete their programs in December, and it’s imperative that BRCC acknowledges and supports this reality by aligning their ceremonial practices.

**Solution and Call to Action:** We urge Baton Rouge Community College to establish a commencement ceremony in December 2026 for nursing students completing their program at the end of the fall semester. This action requires administrative planning but offers profound benefits to the students' morale and reflects BRCC’s commitment to student success.

Please sign this petition to support our request for a Fall December 2026 commencement ceremony. Together, we can bring about a change that recognizes and celebrates the hard-earned accomplishments of nursing students at BRCC.
