As Native Americans, we have long been dehumanized and used as mascots. With the modern spread of racial consciousness, major companies have taken into account the voices of native people and stopped using the names of indigenous ethnicities, such as Cherokee, Apache, Indians, or sometimes racial slurs etc, to sell their merchandise. Jeep for example, is one of the countless large corporations to recently promise to stop using the name of a native group.

The mountain gear brand Quechua, by Decathlon was founded by a group of white French men who took a trip to the Andes mountains. They have become one of the most popular hiking and camping equipment companies in the world. We now want them to change their name to something more appropriate.

The real Quechua people are much more than just backpacks and hiking boots. They are the millions of natives keeping their beautiful languages and cultures alive. Having faced such a traumatic history and a current difficult sociopolitical climate, we shouldn't be stripping them of their dignity as well. Their name deserves true recognition, not a semi racist homage by a European company who doesn't even donate any money to help out or support people from Quechua tribes.

If Decathlon truly respects Quechua people, they will use a different name, perhaps a word from a Quechua language, not the entire ethnic group themselves. Please, no more cultural erasure. Why even trademark the name of Native Americans?
