We are calling on Doug Ford and Hon. Caroline Mulroney, Minister of Transportation, to automatically upgrade G2 licences in Ontario to G licences provided that licence holders have been 1. Driving for a minimum of 2 years with 2. No previous police (tickets, fines, etc) or accident history.

Drivetest.ca is currently facing a backlog of over 700,000 tests- a number that is not going to be solved with adding only 6 new locations- 2 of which are already fully booked until 2022.

After having 2 appointments cancelled due to COVID restrictions, I have waited 5+ 1-hour bouts online to be shown 0 new testing appointments, 1.5+ hours on the phone to be told that only 5 testing centres can be checked at a time and that "it doesn't seem as though more appointments will be added in the near future." This included checking the two new locations that opened today (Guelph and Oshawa)- which are already booked until December 2022. I have been and continue to be unsuccessful in all attempts to book a G test within the next year. The unfortunate reality is that my story is not a unique one. Some news stations are reporting that locations are booked until 2025. This is clearly not sustainable and further hinders new drivers/Ontario citizens from obtaining their G1 and G2 licences. 

Not only is transport important to Ontarians in the context of driving to/from school and work, it also is damaging to young adults and new drivers through insurance rates which are significantly higher for those with G2 level licences- a penalty that will continue to impact more and more citizens until a viable solution is found.

The goal of this petition is to provide a safe and more efficient way for Ontario citizens to obtain their licences while addressing the ever-growing backlog of tests due to COVID-19 in Ontario. We, the people of Ontario, demand better.
