Dear NYC DoE, Please Fix the Discipline Code

Dear NYC DoE, Please Fix the Discipline Code
The NYC DoE has changed the school discipline code to the extent that it no longer enables our schools to effectively address discipline. Although a major goal of the de Blasio administration was to reform school discipline policies and procedures, the result of the changes have made our schools less safe, not safer. The current discipline code prevents our school leaders from keeping our students and staff safe from serious behavior violations for which there are no real consequences. We want the NYC DoE, under the purview of Mayor Adams, to address and change the discipline code to ensure the safety and well-being of our students and staff by:
- Modifying and enforcing the discipline code to assure that there are real consequences for student misbehavior, particularly when it is disruptive to instruction
- Making sure schools have sufficient support staff to genuinely meet the social-emotional needs of our students
- Reevaluating the reduction of Alternative Learning Centers (ALCs) throughout the boroughs
- Providing support to schools for students that are over-aged and under-credited
- Assuring students, parents and staff that every school will be orderly and safe
- Implementing an authentic approach to equitable measures for all students, with full school support
- Genuinely engaging school communities and listening to what schools need from the practitioners within each building
