Open letter to my Israeli friends, English version below

Carta abierta a mis amigos israelíes,

Necesitamos vuestra ayuda para detener la degradación autoinfligida a la reputación de Israel.

Israel ha sido admirado por ser una democracia con una economía fuerte y una sociedad multicultural vibrante, que produce ciencia y arte de primer nivel, protegiendo los derechos de las mujeres y la diversidad sexual. Esta admiración está manchada por el trato medieval a la población de los territorios ocupados.

Sin el liderazgo israelí, cualquier acción internacional se etiqueta como antisemitismo. La injusticia sufrida por el pueblo palestino y el trato cruel que actualmente se inflige a millones de seres humanos en Gaza tienen que cesar.

Israel fue creado como respuesta a la injusticia histórica y la crueldad que el pueblo judío sufrió a manos de los europeos, más recientemente en las décadas de 1930 y 1940. El mundo occidental respaldó al pueblo judío a través de la creación del estado de Israel por parte de la ONU. Israel debería, más que nadie, cumplir con las resoluciones de la ONU que ignora sistemáticamente.

La injusticia contra la población palestina ha sido permitida silenciosamente por nuestros gobiernos, razonando que Israel estaba rodeado de países hostiles y necesitaba comprensión. Pero hay límites. Israel tiene derecho a defenderse, pero su mejor defensa es promover la paz con sus vecinos, reconociendo el derecho de la población palestina a vivir libremente en su tierra. Los horribles ataques de octubre que causaron más de mil muertos han encontrado a una respuesta abrumadora: el bombardeo del Líbano, Siria, Irán y la destrucción sistemática de Gaza.  Aunque los gobiernos occidentales todavía apoyan a Israel, la gangrena está ahí. Israel está perdiendo el apoyo de la opinión pública mundial que no puede entender cómo las víctimas se han convertido en asesinos.

¿Cómo convenció el gobierno israelí a su propio pueblo de que es aceptable continuar con una masacre sistemática mientras abandona a los rehenes israelíes secuestrados en octubre de 2024? ¿Es aceptable destruir hospitales, universidades, centros culturales y religiosos?

¿Cuántos niños tienen que morir de hambre, perder a sus familias o, si tienen suerte, ser rápidamente desmembrados por una bomba fabricada y vendida por nosotros, el mundo occidental?

¿Cómo puede la gente honesta observar en silencio a su ejército participando en una repetición de lo que el pueblo judío soportó 80 años antes? Muerte por hambre y sed de niños, expulsión de seres humanos de sus hogares, destrucción de barrios enteros y creación de guetos.

¿Es esta la forma en que seremos recordados?

¿Cómo puede el mundo occidental contemplar este horror en silencio? ¿Cómo pueden mis amigos israelíes aceptar sin reaccionar la ira y la crueldad que su ejército se ve obligado a causar?

¿Cómo explicaremos, cómo explicaréis, este horror a nuestros nietos?

¿Diremos que no sabíamos lo que estaba pasando?

¿Diremos que se ha exagerado enormemente el número de muertos y las toneladas de bombas lanzadas sobre civiles? ¿Que no hubo asesinatos, ni desplazamientos, que todo son mentiras y propaganda antisemita?

¿Está preparado el gobierno de Israel para aceptar que en el futuro la Estrella de David en su bandera se una a otros símbolos vilipendiados como sucedió con la ahora infame esvástica? Tal traición a la memoria de las víctimas del holocausto es inaceptable.

El mal no puede ser combatido con el mal. La violencia solo genera más violencia. Está en manos de las sociedades avanzadas detener el círculo vicioso.

 

Queridos amigos, por favor, ayudadnos liderando una coalición internacional para detener esta masacre. Por favor, restaurad la admiración del mundo promoviendo una solución justa que permita a los pueblos semíticos palestino e israelí compartir la paz y el progreso.

Open letter to my Israeli friends,

We need your help to stop the self-inflicted degradation of Israel’s reputation.

Israel has been admired for being a democracy with a strong economy and a vibrant multicultural society, producing top science and art, protecting the rights of women and sexual diversity. This admiration is tainted by the medieval treatment to the population of the occupied territories.

Without Israeli leadership any international action is labelled as anti-Semitism. The injustice suffered by the Palestinian people, and the cruel treatment currently inflicted to millions of human beings in Gaza has to stop.

Israel was created as a response to the historical injustice and cruelty that Jewish people suffered at the hands of Europeans, most recently in the 1930-1940’s. The western world backed the Jewish people through the UN creation of the state of Israel, a country that should, more than any other, comply with the UN resolutions which has systematically ignored.

The injustice to the Palestinian population has been silently allowed by our western governments, reasoning that Israel was surrounded by unfriendly countries and needed comprehension. But there are limits. Israel has the right to defend itself, but its best defence is to promote peace with its neighbours, acknowledging the rights of the Palestinian population to live freely in their land. The horrible October attacks causing over a thousand deaths have led to an overwhelming response: the bombing of Lebanon, Syria, Iran and the systematic destruction of Gaza.  Although, western governments still support Israel, the gangrene is there. Israel is losing the support of the world’s public opinion that cannot understand how the victims have become slaughterers.

How did the Israeli government convince its own people that it is acceptable to continue a systematic massacre while abandoning the innocent Israeli hostages kidnapped in October 2024? That is acceptable to destroy hospitals, universities, cultural, and religious centres?

How many children have to die of hunger, lose their families or, if lucky, be quickly dismembered by a bomb made and sold by us, the western world?

How can the good Israeli people silently observe their army participating in a replay of what the Jewish people endured themselves 80 years earlier? Death by hunger and thirst of children, expulsion of human beings from their homes, destruction of whole neighbourhoods and creation of ghettos.

Is this the way we will be remembered?

How can the western world watch this horror in silence? How can my Israeli friends accept without action the wrath and cruelty their army is forced to cause?

How will we, how will you, explain such horror to our grandchildren?

Will we claim that we did not know what was going on?

Will we say that the reported number of deaths and the tons of bombs dropped on civilians have been greatly exaggerated? That there were no killings, no displacements, that those are lies and anti-Semitic propaganda?

Is the Israel government ready to accept that in the future the Star of David in its flag joins other vilified symbols as it happened to the now infamous swastika? Such treason to the memory of the holocaust victims is unacceptable.

Evil cannot be combat with evil. Violence only generates more violence. It is in the hands of advanced societies to stop the vicious circle.

Dear friends, please, help us by leading an international coalition to stop the massacre. Please, restore the world’s admiration by promoting a just solution allowing the Palestinian and Israeli Semitic people to share peace and progress.
