Big tax preparation companies have literally prevented the government from automatically calculating the taxes you owe based on information the IRS already has from your employer.  Every time Congress or the IRS tries to make paying taxes simpler, they lobby to block it.

Why? Because if taxes get too easy, these companies can’t charge you for their services and software.  And all of us bear the burden of this scam every year on "Tax Day".

It’s way past time to remove the barriers to easy, free tax filing.

Every year around this time, Americans do battle with their taxes.  They battle, and battle, and keep battling.

It sucks.  And it’s expensive.  And it’s unusually easy to fix.

Why does tax preparation still suck so much?  

Ever wonder to yourself, “Why I am typing this in if the government already has this information?”  

The answer is simple: You have to a do all that work or pay someone to do it, because a few big tax preparation companies have been lobbying, donating to, and pressuring politicians to block simple steps that would make it easier.

What is the solution?

There has been bipartisan support for decades to make tax filing less expensive and less arduous.  It’s such an obvious fucking thing.  This year, Elizabeth Warren has released a proposal to finally make “return-free filing” a reality.
