Give MTSU students a Spring Break

The Issue

Due to COVID-19, we have switched to remote learning. This pandemic has been inconvenient and stressful for everyone, especially students. This Fall semester has been rushed and many students have expressed their need more than ever for a Fall Break. We understand that due to most of our classes being online that school seems to be done on our own time. However, it does not feel like that at all. Most of my classes are treating it as if we are meeting regularly pre COVID-19. Work loads seem to be more than usual and it seems as if though professors are giving out "busy work." Also, distant learning is more challenging for most. We have already seen studies on how each student is different in terms of how they learn and retain information.

Breaks during the semester have been recognized as that time for students and professors to relax and reset. The absence of Fall 2020 break has caused even more stressed outside of the pandemic. As college students, we often stress how important mental health is. Yet, our institution has not allowed for their students, nor their staff to take a mental health break. President McPhFee tried to give us a day of no classes. However, most students like myself were already given Fridays off due to our class schedules. So, his attempt was not helpful at all.

Students feel that they should have a valid explanation as to why the institution chose to take away our Fall Break. We also feel that since we are the ones paying to be here, we should have a say in whether or not our breaks should be taken away from us. According to MTSU's counseling center, they have received more walk ins this semester than before. With that being said, students of MTSU have earned an official Spring Break.
