Consider Sign Language to be recognized as a language at Saint Joseph's College

Consider Sign Language to be recognized as a language at Saint Joseph's College
The Issue
It has been brought to our attention that taking Sign Language classes is not recognized as a language requirement to graduate, (whereas Spanish, French, Italian, German, and Mandarin Chinese are recognized as a language; to name a few). The Sign Langauge Club at Saint Joseph's College has come across a few points as to why Sign Langauge should be considered a language requirement. Language is defined as; the method of human communication, either spoken or written, consisting of the use of words in a structured and conventional way. Just because an individual is not using words verbally does not insinuate that it's not a language. Allowing Sign Langauge to be considered a language at Saint Joseph's College can help bring more awareness to the Deaf community, culture and can even be useful to those in speech majors. This can also help the college achieve ASL-02 and ASL-03. Some students have taken Sign Language courses in High School and wish to continue their education in Sign Language in college. Sign Langauge is considered an official language, it is just not recognized by any colleges as a language requirement for graduation. This can even help influence other colleges to accept Sign Language as a language requirement. Sign Language can be very emotional and beautiful and help an individual express themselves, even more, when signing a song or poem. The Sign Language Club at Saint Joseph's College would love if you could sign this petition so we can stop the discrimination against Sign Language and help spread awareness about the Deaf Community!
