AYOKONG MAGMAHAL DLSU-D

ANAKBAYAN-KALAYAAN, as the organization at the forefront of the students' struggle for quality and accessible education, strongly opposes the tuition fee increase proposal for the academic year (AY) 2019-2020. Amid there is already a struggle in skyrocketing prices of commodities and services, a continuous increase will only add another burden for the students, most especially for the incoming first years. Thus, making education more inaccessible.

According to an article released by Heraldo Filipino, the average percentage increase in tuition fee for the AY 2015-2016, 2016-2017, 2017-2018 is 3.04%, 2.48%, and 5%, respectively; with the highest increase per year level being constantly attributed to the incoming freshmen. Moreover, it is also stated that the basis for another increase of tution includes the inflation rate in the country, improvement in facilities for student use, and upgrading of equipments.

Not only is the institution affected by the worsening inflation rate of the country. As an educational institution, the university should first and foremost prioritize its stakeholders, the students. Consider the economic status of the families of these students. Despite the already expensive tution fee, they'd take the risk to simply be able to access to quality education. Increasing the tution with regards to inflation affecting this insitution, signifies that the students are the ones who experience the consequences firsthand which should not be the case. AB-Kalayaan strongly believes that students should not be the punching bags of the administration. Education is a right; not a business nor an avenue for businesses to prosper.

On February 21, 2019, the students of Far Eastern University organized a silent protest against the proposed tuition fee increase by their university. The Far Eastern University Central Student Organization (FEUCSO) opposed, by conducting #WalangPipirma campaign, during the consultation. A number of 41 student organizations did not attend the said consultation too. A network namely, #AyokongMagmahalFEU Network, orchestrated a black ribbon tying and a silent protest, as a sign of dissent. AB-Kalayaan commends this valiant act of FEUSCO in opposing the said tuition fee increase. As part of the Lasallian community, we should uphold the right of the students to an accessible and quality education, which is one of the ideals of St. John Baptiste de la Salle. Thus, we are encouraging the University Student Council of DLSU-D to do the same and assert the students' rights.

As the deliberation process in still ongoing, ultimately, AB-Kalayaan urges the University Student Council, Program Councils, Student Councils and Organizations and the entire student body to unite and make a stand against another tuition fee increase - the fourth consecutive increase in 4 years. Listen to the dissent of the vast majority. As a medium of their voices, issue stances regarding the matter on hand.

Join the campaign planning against tuition increase and educational discussion starting March 11—our Lasallian Festival. Stay tuned for updates.

To be silent benefits nobody.
