Help Ellington Seniors Graduate!

Help Ellington Seniors Graduate!

The Issue

Senior year is supposed to be filled with wonderful memories of homecomings, performances, AP tests, prom, and most importantly—graduation. For students at Duke Ellington School of the Arts, getting to senior year is no small feat and Ellington goes above and beyond to celebrate the accomplishments of their students. Ellington has given us many opportunities to further our artistic endeavors and has shaped us to become global citizens.  Unfortunately, due to COVID-19, our school’s administration has been forced with a challenge: how to honor the seniors in the midst of a global pandemic. As seniors, we have worked so hard to get to the point we made it to, and while no one could have predicted the current situation we are in: our accomplishments should not go in vain. We feel that DCPS as a whole has given up on the Class of 2020 and we will not let that go quietly. That is why we need your support. We are asking the permission of DCPS, Duke Ellington School of the Arts, and Mayor Muriel Bowser to allow us to graduate on our school’s front lawn. The graduating Class of 2020 for Duke Ellington School of the Arts comprises of 130 students. Our front lawn houses more than enough space for every student, administrator, and teacher to safely social distance, at 6 feet apart, from one another. Also, our parents will be able to safely attend as well while complying to social distancing policies. In addition to social distancing, to comply with safety regulations, every student will wear a mask to prevent the possible spread of COVID-19. While these circumstances are not ideal, we are aware that our country is beginning to learn our new normal. Please help us by signing this petition.
