Consider Writing Damian Wayne (the current Robin) as an LGBT character

The Issue

Hello,

Recently DC Comics made the decision to write Alan Scott, aka the Green Lantern, as a gay character. I think this is a wonderful decision. I would like DC to do more.

This may seem greedy, but I feel it is also important.

So many of our children in the United States are dying in the most tragic of ways: suicide. According to the United States National Institutes of Health, suicide is the 3rd leading cause of death in youth ages 15 to 24. The Suicide Prevention Resource Center estimates that 40% of LGBT youth attempt suicide, and the Trevor Project reports that 90% of LGBT youth are dangerously bullied at school.

Reworking Alan Scott as a golden, adult role model is a great step forward, giving LGBT youth something to strive for and look forward to.

But, to many LGBT youth, the future is a hideous, dark place only ever full of the promise of pain, empty of anything resembling hope. They read Alan Scott's glowing story & know it to be fiction; it is out of their reach, a slap in the face & one more reason to give up.

That is why I feel it is necessary to provide our dying children with an LGBT character that has more immediate impact: Damian Wayne.

Damain Wayne would be a great LGBT character. A young boy struggling for a normal, loving relationship with his family, violently lashing out in confused desperation, his story, without any modification at all, is already cookie-cutter identical with the kind of hell & torment that LGBT youth suffer through in real life.

On a literary level, Damian Wayne being a base-line human struggling for a normality that should've been the most natural thing is a powerful metaphor that would immediately reverberate with young LGBT readers.

I feel that reading about a character whose life so closely matches the real lives of LGBT youth could shake a potentially suicidal child from a destructive course.

As you may have guessed, LGBT suicide is a personal issue for me. I can say that during the phase of my life in which I nearly died, there was no golden sun that could penetrate my gloom. Alan Scott would have been no help.

But if I could have had a brother who shared my pain...

Please consider Damian Wayne as a LGBT character. There is a lot of potential here.
