Day off for Diwali
The Issue
Diwali, also known as the Festival of Lights, is a significant celebration for many individuals around the world. Over 1 billion people celebrate Diwali, making it one of the most celebrated holidays around the globe. For me, it is more than just a religious ceremony - it is a time of joy, family, and the celebration of light over darkness. Every year, we hold parties and partake in traditions, and, of course, eat amazing food. It is a prestigious holiday that I hold near and dear to my heart.
Despite its importance to many students and faculty, Diwali is currently not recognized as a school holiday. While each of us respects and appreciates the diverse array of holidays celebrated in our community, it is disheartening to note that the individuals who celebrate Diwali do not receive the same acknowledgment.
School should be a place where cultural diversity is embraced and celebrated. A study by the Washington Post suggests that recognizing diverse holidays in schools can lead to enhanced multicultural understanding among students. It opens a window for educating students about the essence of different cultures and traditions. I believe this applies to Diwali as well.
This petition is a call to action to recognize Diwali as a school holiday, similar to how other religious and cultural holidays are acknowledged and celebrated. It's a step towards promoting inclusive education by acknowledging the importance of this festival to the students and faculty who celebrate it.
We request your support in bringing light to this cause. Please sign this petition to acknowledge the importance of Diwali and support the call for it to be recognized as a school holiday.
