Odelia and Nerissa's bail hearing is fast approaching. Not fast enough though, for these Indigenous sisters who will have to spend another Christmas behind bars. The hearing is scheduled to be heard in Yorkton, Saskatchewan on January 17 & 18, 2023. Our hope is that the Quewezance sisters are granted bail pending federal conviction review, which can take two years or more. If granted bail, Odelia and Nerissa will be able to go home and finally be with their family after being incarcerated for 30 years for a crime they did not commit.
Since I will be attending the hearing in person, there will be an Indigenous representative standing in my place, who will be petitioning in front of Regina's Parliament on January 17th. This is to raise awareness of the Quewezance case and of the bail hearing going on that day, and to encourage the Minister of Justice Bronwyn Eyre, (and government officials) to acknowledge the harm done, and make attempts at reconciliation. So far, the Minister of Justice in Saskatchewan has not publically answered the questions posed in legislature, nor has she made any attempts to rectify this miscarriage of justice. And remember.... ANY Minister in Canada has the ability to make a written recommendation of clemency to Canada's Governor General. Only the Governor General has the ability to invoke the royal prerogative of mercy. However, the Minister of Justice continues to pass concerned citizens on to Ottawa instead.
Please sign and share the petition, and if you are able, ATTEND the petition gathering at Regina's Parliament on January 17th. More information will be provided closer to! Let's stand in solidarity and let Canada know we will not tolerate this!!!
Thank you,
Nicole
