The Saskatchewan Minister of Justice has done nothing to acknowledge the harm done to these indigenous women, nor have they made attempts at reconciliation. We are thankful the Judge rejected the Crown's attempt at a publication ban and sealing of court records, and we want pressure to remain on the Saskatchewan Minister of Justice, Bronwyn Eyre. She did not even attempt to answer the questions put to her in last week's provincial legislature, instead passing concerns to federal Justice Minister David Lametti. A typical response from the feedback I'm getting. Lametti has acknowledged a potential miscarriage of justice here and has therefore started a federal review. The pressure needs to remain on the SASKATCHEWAN government, despite their attempts to both shove it under the rug and pass it to another office.
What Bronwyn Eyre's office isnt telling you is that ANY Minister (although more often than not it's the Minister of Public Safety) can recommend clemency to our Governor General - who has the ability to grant the royal prerogative of mercy. In other words, Minister Eyre has the ability to do the following:
- acknowledge the harm done to these indigenous women
- comment on whether she supports the federal review of the Quewezance sisters
- confirm whether the Province of Saskatchewan will cooperate with federal officials for the review
- make the recommendation to the Governor General of Canada, for clemency to invoke the royal prerogative of mercy
