Keep St. Louis Bread Co. (Panera) in the Delmar Loop

Keep St. Louis Bread Co. (Panera) in the Delmar Loop

The Issue

Panera Bread, the parent company of St. Louis Bread Company, has announced plans to close one of its most beloved cafes - the Delmar Loop location - at the end of this year. The Riverfront Times reports that a combination of circumstances may be influencing the decision, chiefly rising rent costs from its neighboring landlord, Commerce Bank, and a decrease in foot traffic due to trolley construction.

No matter the circumstances, thousands of residents in Mid and North St. Louis County depend on this location, not just as a source of food or as a gathering place, but also as a symbol of continuity and prosperity for one of the most diverse communities in the region. Closing this location would contribute to an already existing food desert for thousands of middle and working class consumers seeking healthy, sustainable and affordable alternatives to fast food chains - the nearest Bread Co. locations north of Delmar are three, six and fourteen miles away, respectively. In the wake of a major recession, our residents and our larger communities need the support of local companies now more than ever. We petition Panera to demonstrate its true commitment to our city and this community by keeping this beloved community center open through thick and thin, showing the people of University City the kind of loyalty that we have shown Bread Co. for nearly three decades.
