Make Joey the Bear the official Brooklyn Technical High School Mascot.

The Issue

Joey the Bear, the unofficial mascot of the Brooklyn Technical High School class of 2020 is above all else, adorable. He is a lovable stuffed teddy bear, however, like many other stuffed bears, and about 6 million American humans, he is unemployed.

His only known possessions are a few BTHS branded t-shirts, a pair of BTHS shorts, and a BTHS hoodie-jacket. He currently lives in public housing in the form of the Joseph Kaelin Center for Student Activities, more colloquially known as 7C1, within the Brooklyn Technical [Public] School. For food, water, and other necessities, he must default to the kindness of the Brooklyn Tech kitchen staff.

Recently, Joey was served a notice stating that, "If the bear in question fails to find a sustainable source of income within a period of 10(ten) months following this notice, he shall be evicted from his public housing, and be revoked of any public assistance."

Worried by the prospect of losing everything but the clothes on his back, Joey told of the notice to three, bright, initiative-taking, young women, who created an Instagram page for Joey, with the hope of him becoming a sponsored influencer.  As gaining the notoriety required for influencer status takes considerable amounts of time, they also provided Joey with a secondary source of exposure: adopting him as the class of 2020 mascot.

In light of these recent events, and the overarching possibility that Joey might be evicted come June, I write this petition, addressed to Principal David Newman, the Brooklyn Technical High School administration, and the New York City Department of Education, asking that Joey the Bear become the official mascot of not just the class of 2020, but of the school as a whole.

With the exception of a few PSAL registered teams, all Brooklyn Tech teams default to the mascot of the nameless, faceless Engineer, or in some cases, such as with Robotics Team, the Techknight, another arbitrary figure. Both mascots come with their own, equally unusual, eponymous team names. Neither has a particularly rich history, nor, as far as I know, a physical representation in the form of anything more realistic than an illustration.

For this reason, and for the reasons regarding Joey's status, I urge you to sign this petition, declaring your support for the official sanctioning of Joey the Bear, and therefore "the Brooklyn Tech Bears", as the mascot and team names, respectively.
