Make our hazardous journey to St Peter's C of E Primary, Heysham safe with a crossing, LCC

The Issue

Taking your children to school shouldn't be  dangerous, but the congested roads around St. Peter's C of E School in Heysham make  crossing the road just that.

Cars are mounting pavements whilst parking, parking over driveways, driving erratically and far too quickly for a road and pavement full of small children and prams. As well as the number 4 stagecoach bus trying to pass on the narrow road at drop off and pick up.

We want Lancashire County Council to begin a consultation to review the traffic conditions around our school, ideally adding a safe crossing point along School Road with a lollipop person to ensure our children get to school safely.

Here are some comments from concerned parents:

"...my husband and our 2 year old son were nearly hit whilst walking on the pavement from school drop off when a car was trying to to do a 3 point turn which nearly mounted the kerb on School Road"
“...we were nearly hit by a car driving too quickly & driving onto the pavement last week... it was a parent or someone doing the school run.”
“The bus worries me every time it comes down there. I’m thinking a zebra crossing would be good, then at least there’ll be one point of crossing instead of the whole length of road.”
“that road is a tragic accident waiting to happen."

"My son has hearing difficulties and crossing the road is a nightmare. I've had to drag him back from the road several times to avoid cars"
“That junction is a fatality waiting to happen , the council won't do anything until something horrible happens.”
“If there was a safe crossing towards the old hall people might be inclined to use the road further down/old Hall”

We thank you for your time in reading this and look forward to hearing your response.
From the parents/ grandparents / carers of the pupils of St Peter’s, Heysham.

Thank you for copying me into your petition for School safety measures at St Peter’s Primary School in Heysham. Back in 2013 following a campaign led by Barbara Langridge, I helped to ensure that the School was given a warning lights system on School Road. These lights were secured by former County Councillor Ken Brown, following a full assessment of all incidents on the road by Lancashire County Council. Lancashire County Council are solely responsible for School safety and indeed Highways, and your elected representative on these matters is County Councillor Andrew Gardiner. Please could Ruth Woodhouse contact me on david.morris.mp@parliament.uk with her full contact details so I can keep in touch regarding this matter. I will also then be able to ask County Councillor Gardiner to contact the group directly and assist with asking the County Council to review the arrangements outside the school. Safety of children is paramount and if the flashing lights have not worked and there have been incidents where children’s safety has been compromised then I want to make sure that these incidents have been reported to the County Council and the safety outside the school reviewed. I will also be contacting the Head Teacher of the School to ask if there have been any incidents outside the school and to make sure these have been reported to the County Council. If any parents who have signed this petition know of any incidents either involving their own children or incidents that they have witnessed please email me on david.morris.mp@parliament.uk.
