Petition for David Lynch to change his racist surname
The Issue
David Lynch, one of the most successful film makers of our generation carries the name Lynch. The word lynch means to (of a group of people) kill (someone) for an alleged offence without a legal trial, especially by hanging. Looking back in history, the black community was unfairly lynched by the racist crowd.
On January 15, 1889, a mob of white men lynched George Meadows at Pratt mines and then riddled his body with bullets. Mr. Meadows was accused of assaulting a white woman, Mrs. Kellam. Photos were taken of his hanging body and distributed. Later, his body was brought to an undertaker and left out in the public for crowds to view. Mrs. Kellam had begged the mob not to lynch Mr. Meadows because she was unsure if he was the right man. This is only a single instance highlighting the dark past of the word 'lynch'.
It is thus necessary that we look at the word through a historical lens and understand its importance as a tool for black oppression and we request director David Lynch to change his surname to one that doesn't invoke the oppression of the black people
