Deed NOT Breed ...
The Issue
This campaign is to change the law in this country as the continued persecution of dogs based on their physical appearance is unacceptable and the law needs to change. The Dangerous Dogs Act bans specific breeds or types and completely overlooks the critical developmental and environmental influences upon individual dog behaviour. Future legislation should focus on the ‘deed rather than the breed’ of the dog. It is the action of the owner and what they encourage or allow their dogs to do that is important rather than the breed or type of dog it is.
THESE ARE THE FACTS: Dogs are being euthanized every day – the current law states that any dog that fits a wide description of a Pitbull is illegal. This applies to all bull breeds of all ages, Stafford’s, Danes and Boxer Crosses are also caught up in this. This Law destroys young healthy dogs that would ordinarily be suitable for rehoming. Some of these dogs are strays or have been seized simply due to unfit living conditions. If owners are prosecuted, the dog is destroyed (even if it’s seen by the officer to be a safe dog). There is NO option for Adoption.
The Dangerous Dogs Act 1991, also known as breed specific legislation (BSL) is ineffective and outdated. It shifts culpability from the truly responsible parties - which are the irresponsible owners – This law discriminates against the entire breed. NO dog should be persecuted because of the irresponsible people who train them to be aggressive - which can in fact be done with any breed!
Battersea Cats and Dogs home says 92% of illegal dogs would have made good pets. Instead they are forced to hand them to police for destruction. Nearly 5,000 dogs have been seized by the police in the last three years because they were suspected of being a banned breed. EXPERTS have proven that Pitbull’s are essentially no different than any other breed and The RSPCA agrees there is no proper evidence that one breed is more aggressive than another. These dogs are in dire need of a change in legislation to enable them the right to caring, stable homes. Breed specific legislation (BSL) stands in the way of that.
I rescued a Stafford from the RSPCA, 2 years ago – I had no intention of getting a staff but he was a long termer, at 7 years old he had been in kennels for over 14 months, having been found stray on the streets of Leeds. For that reason I took him – with an open mind and heart.
‘Sailor’ has turned out to be the most loyal, fun loving, humorous dog I’ve ever had the pleasure of owning. All he wants in life is a walk, his dinner and someone to snuggle with – he sleeps like a pack dog and always has to be touching someone (anyone!) He is a fully-fledged member of the family – and simply loves meeting new people.
Sailor and I see every day what the BSL and the media have done to these types of dogs and to their good owners! We get dirty looks, people drag their children out the way, or they cross the road, I get shouted at to move my dog out the way, I have constant arguments defending my dog to people who think “they are all the same” .
But you know what - I walk out with my head held high, knowing I have the best friend ever. Sailor is a one of the lucky ones!
This campaign is to have the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991 - presented in the House of Commons to urge the Government to take action. It’s time to make all dog owners take accountability and responsibility. Give dogs that are branded by breed not deed the chance for a good home and life. This is for all the innocent banned breeds on death row.
TOGETHER WE CAN MAKE THE CHANGE!
