Let early graduates participate in prom court and attend prom like any other student

The Issue

I want to get as many people as possible to help support the early graduates, to show the School Board that there are people getting effected by this on a daily basis. Not only the students but their families as well. These families are going to miss out on all the joys of getting their children ready for prom and seeing their children have fun with their friends. Let early graduates be fully involved in their last moments and memories of their final high school years.
Prom is a big celebration to show students how far they have come and how much they have accomplished. Why should students who graduated early miss out on that? I´ll tell you what, they shouldn't. That is why all of us need to come together and change this policy. The way you can help is by signing this petition that it will be taken to the school board. A quick signature is all we ask for; you can sign from anywhere. Every signature helps. We have put in too much hard work to let the opportunity of attending prom and running for prom queen and king be taken away from us.

I am Carrington Weeks a Seventeen year old senior at Davenport North High School. During my highschool years I have been in band, orchestra, manager of the football team and I am currently running for Student Council, I am also in the MVP (Mentors in Violence Prevention) group. I am a student who has been putting all of my time towards school especially for the last 4 months.
Last year’s Edgenuity classes very difficult and time consuming. I unfortunately was not doing very well. Classes online took twice as long as regular school hours to be on target. Edgenuity classes were not the same amount of work that students in school were doing before the update, I have been told this by multiple teachers. To catch up from the classes I had failed, I attended summer school which was fifteen days long. At this time I completed two courses with A’s.

I spoke with my counselor to see if it would be possible
for me to continue online classes while I also attended in school classes at the same time. Since August 23, 2021, I have completed eight classes. Four online and four in school all with a grade of B or higher except one class. During first term I was informed that it would be possible for me to graduate as early as January of 2022.

I have been working so hard, putting all of my time and energy into school. Ever since middle school I have always dreamed about graduating early. My first two years of highschool I didn't think that was possible for me, but now it is. Now that one dream is coming true, one is getting taken aways from me. I can’t run for prom queen if I graduate early. Early graduates are only able to attend prom as a guest, which means someone who is still attending that school has to invite you and you have to fill out a form to see if you can go.
Why are they denying these students their memories. Those of us who are graduating but still want to experience our last memories won’t be able to fully experience them. Not only are these our last moments to remember high school by, it will also be some of out last moments with friends before we all separate and go to different colleges, states, and jobs. How many of your high school friends do you keep up with ? How many have you seen in the last couple of years? Sometimes all you get to remember somebody by is memories. Are you going to let us miss out on that?

We are graduating high school. We worked hard to get here. Yet we are being punished? Some students don't graduate at all. So why are we the ones who have to miss out? I have surprised myself with how far I have come and how much I have accomplished. All I want to do is celebrate these last moments to the fullest. Let us go to prom and participate in running for prom court.

I want this petition to help the early graduates of 2022 and all of those to come. Let’s celebrate these excellent students and change this policy.
Thank you for your time.
