DASD Needs a Safer Route 11 Crosswalk
DASD Needs a Safer Route 11 Crosswalk
The Issue
Due to the approvals granted for Wawa construction at the intersection of Route 11 and State Hospital Drive, PennDOT is legally required to make improvements to the existing intersection. This includes building an ADA-compliant pedestrian crosswalk from the Danville Area School District (DASD) Primary and High School campuses to these establishments.
Crosswalk construction is proceeding despite the following hazardous conditions:
- The speed limit at this section of Route 11 is 55 MPH
- There are no sidewalks on either side of the proposed crosswalk
- This is a high-traffic area with school buses, tractor-trailers, and young drivers
As community members, many with children enrolled in a DASD school, we are deeply concerned about the safety of our youth and all residents who will now cross Route 11 here.
Our priority is for PennDOT to implement as many safety features as possible to mitigate potential incidents. We are calling for PennDOT, the Danville Borough Council, the Mahoning Township Supervisors, Wawa, and other stakeholders to take the following actions:
- Place an above or below-ground crosswalk that is ADA-compliant and bicycle-accessible
- Implement signal-controlled crossing (i.e., a crossing with call buttons that aligns crosswalk signal timing with traffic light phases)
- Reduce the existing speed limit from 55 MPH to 35 MPH
- Establish a school zone, further reducing the speed limit to 15 MPH when students are arriving at and leaving school
- Install clear and highly visible crosswalk signage
These critical investments in our community's infrastructure are necessary to help ensure every person, regardless of age or ability, can cross without exposure to life-threatening risks. Ultimately, by implementing the above actions, we can prevent potential life-threatening accidents and create a safer environment for all.
Please join us and support this initiative by signing this petition. Signatures will be presented to PennDOT, the Danville Borough Council, and other groups as needed to enact changes to proposed plans.
Let's make the safety of our children and community a top priority.
