Darlene Mealy - City Council, District 41 & Veronica M. White, Commissioner, New York City Department of Parks & Recreation : Give Lincoln Terrace Park A Dog Run!

The Issue

Lincoln Terrace Park is a center of activity for Crown Heights. The basketball courts, tennis courts, and football field are usually filled with teams playing. The playground attracts all of the local children, while the exercise yard is full of guys doing chin-ups and sit-ups. In the summer, families picnic on the large, grassy field at the center of the park.

The park would seem to have it all, but it is missing one important area: a dog run, and the Crown Heights community feels it is time Lincoln Terrace Park had one.

The neighborhood has a large dog population, and one can always find people walking their dogs throughout the park, but there is no place for dogs to run off-leash and socialize in a safe environment. Socializing is important for dogs to improve their interactions with other dogs, and it also gives them a place to exercise. It gives the neighborhood dog owners a place to come together. A dog run would be a selling point in a community that is undergoing rapid change and an influx of young professionals with pets.

Several areas of the park are already well suited for a dog run and only require minor modifications and fencing. There are two areas, one by the playground and another by the tennis courts, which are already mostly fenced in and would just need gates added.

We ask that the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation put in a dog run in Lincoln Terrace Park as soon as possible. We feel it is a vital addition to a changing community.
