Wegmans for Albany

Wegmans for Albany
The Issue
Wegmans has been consistently ranked as among the best grocery stores, and in 2018 was named, "America's Favorite Supermarket," in a survey of more than 12,000 consumers nationwide conducted by Market Force Information. Founded in Rochester, NY, this grocery chain has been the shining beacon of the grocery industry for more than 100 years! Even though Wegmans can be found throughout New York State, the capital region (Albany, NY and surrounding areas) has been left without a Wegmans. As Wegmans expands into Massachusetts, New Jersey, and Virginia, Albany is being left behind. Some say this is due to an informal agreement with the Golub family who started Price Chopper. While sources reject this theory, it does seem strange that Albany, NY has been left Wegman-less.
With the passing of Jane Golub this year, surely Wegmans can look beyond any gentleman's agreement that had been made explicitly or otherwise. The people need a Wegmans.
After years of petitioning for a Trader Joe's by area leaders, we finally saw the opening of the chain and then later a Whole Foods. These are two of the most popular grocery stores, and yet, I believe they would not touch the impact of a Wegmans Store with its unique store brand, quality items, and family feel. Virtually any location would be sure to thrive as people from the Adirondacks to Western MA and VT would probably visit. This area is a hub for travelers passing through north to Canada, to Saratoga's historic racecourse, or on through to Boston or NYC. Bring us Wegmans!
