Improved quality of air

Improved quality of air
The Issue
Over 1 lakh asthma patients were administered the 'fish prasadam' - an old and sure cure for asthma last week on June 8 in Hyderabad. Every year the response to this event on Mrigasira Karthi is overwhelming. It is a grim reminder of the poor quality air that we breathe. The theme for 2019 World Environment Day is Air Pollution.
Air pollution is claiming 12 lakh Indian lives every year and affecting the health of millions of children and adults. In the world 7 million lives are lost every year from exposure to fine particles in polluted air, according to United Nations Development Programme.
Studies have shown that air pollution causes cancer, cardiovascular diseases, kidney related diseases, brain related diseases, respiratory infections whose symptoms include watery nose, cough, lung infections and asthma. The adverse health impacts are irreparable.
The 2030 agenda for Sustainable Development Goals lists Good health and Well-Being at number three and we are way off the mark to achieving this goal.
Hyderabad’s air quality index ranges between 86 -127 in various parts of the city. PM 10 levels are 79 and PM 2.5 is at 59. According to WHO standards PM 10 in Hyderabad is high.
This causes major health risks like breathing discomfort, asthma, prolonged respiratory ailments, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, lung cancer and heart diseases. Children and senior citizens are particularly prone to these ailments.
Since there is scope for improvement in Hyderabad’s air quality, we must take adequate action towards this.
Construction and debris waste is the largest contributor to air pollution in Hyderabad. Factories exhaust, vehicular exhaust and garbage burning are also deteriorating air quality. Almost every home has someone suffering from a cough or cold that is persisting for weeks at a stretch and does not respond to treatment. This is because of continuous exposure to polluted air.
Please sign this petition to the authorities in GHMC to stop garbage incineration, unnecessary demolitions and re-modelling of buildings.
