Reallocate a Portion of Muncie Police Funds to Community Services

The Issue

Throughout June, the citizens of Muncie, Indiana have shown overwhelming support for the fight against racial injustice. However, the inaction seen from officials is not enough. It is not enough for the police to set up programs that allow self-monitoring, something that has been proven not to work. We must hold them accountable for the change we want to see in our own community. There needs to be a clear solution to the problem. The best answer is a reallocation of city funds. We want to see less money go to the police department and more go toward other public services. We want to see the money go toward mental and behavioral help services, youth programs, and small businesses in need from the COVID-19 outbreak.

The Muncie Police Department gets millions of dollars allocated to them per year. A portion of their funding should be reallocated to community services that actually help keep people out of prison to begin with. We need to take care of our community first to keep them out of prisons, thus lessening the need for police. Without taking steps to actually prevent racial injustices happening in our own backyard, there will not be a country-wide change to stop inequality as a whole.
