Corvallis Plastic Water Bottle Ban
The Issue
Plastic pollution is a huge threat facing our environment and our ocean. The ocean is responsible for half of the air we breathe. Seriously, every other breath we take is because of the ocean. Our ocean is currently filled with 5.25 trillion pieces of plastic which equals to about 269,000 tons. People around the world eat an estimated of 5 grams of plastic each week. That is equivalent to eating a credit card each week!! Over that week, a person ingests almost 2,000 micro plastic particles from drinking water alone. Overall, plastic is not only harming the ocean, but our health as well. Oregon has already done a tremendous job battling the plastic problem by banning plastic bags and straws. I believe Corvallis can take it a step further by being the first city in Oregon to ban plastic single use water bottles under one liter. We can follow the lead of other cities, such as Concord, Massachusetts which banned single use plastic water bottles in 2013. Please, take a stand with me, and sign this petition to ban single use plastic water bottles in Corvallis, Oregon. This is a small step our community can take against the fight against plastic pollution. 35 billion plastic water bottles are thrown away in America every year. A plastic water bottle ban in Corvallis will help lower that number and keep plastic out of our ocean.
