Trader Joe's: Stop selling meat raised on antibiotics

Having recently moved back to upstate NY after living in the west for a few years, I'm glad to see that Trader Joe's is opening a store in Syracuse.   There's a lot to love about shopping at their unique stores... but the one thing I don't love is that the company still sells meat raised on antibiotics.    

Right now 80% of antibiotics in the U.S. are sold for use in livestock production and are given regularly to healthy animals to make them grow faster and survive in cramped, unsanitary conditions.  This constant, low-dosing creates antibiotic-resistant superbugs that can get into our air, environment and the meat we eat.   

Can you imagine taking antibiotics just in case you might get sick?  Or to make yourself grow bigger? It's outrageous to think about.   

As a mom and a teacher, it seems to me that Rep. Louise Slaughter, a Congresswoman from upstate NY, got it right when she said:  "We don't sprinkle antibiotics on children's cereal every morning to prevent illness. Why allow industrial farms to do the equivalent with animal feed?"  

Responsible companies like Whole Foods, Chipotle, Panera and Chick-fil-have made commitments in sourcing meat raised without antibiotics - but we need more companies to move their suppliers in this direction. 

Trader Joe's, your customers expect better from you.   Make a commitment to public health and stop selling meat raised on antibiotics.
