3 Texas Cities Killing Feral/Stray Cats, Telling Citizens Not to Feed Feral/Stray Cats

The Issue

According to a local newspaper report from the Pt. Arthur News that was put out several weeks ago, the men listed above have stated that all feral and stray animals will be killed.  They went on to say feral/stray cats are a problem and that they were going to make residents stop feeding them.  D. Sosa of Groves condoned the killing of the cats, all 3 cities provide traps for catching cats and what happens to them after the cat is trapped doesn't seem to be of any concern. The Animal Supervisor of Groves admitted it's when trapped it's sometimes hard to tell a feral from someone's pet.

The City of Nederland's shelter is state-approved for dogs only.  The only thing they can do is if a cat is hurt, they can bring it in and put it to sleep and if a citizen calls and says they are being over run by feral/strays, they give them a cage and leave it up to the citizen to find the owner or dispose of the cat. Nederland has a City Ordnance not allowing citizens to feed feral/strays and are limited to 5 pets.  If anyone gets caught feeding strays the 1st time there is a $200 fine.

The City of Pt. Arthur Supervisor was told about TNR and he responded by saying "But a spayed or neutered cat will want to eat. It will still need to urinate or defecate even if they are not reproducing".  These men are the kind of people we have deciding the fate of our feral/stray cats.  He said people feeding the feral/stray cats are the problem, mostly elderly.

Now the city manager in my city (Groves) wants to adopt a similar ordnance as Nederland and not allow us to feed feral/strays, limit the number of our pets and continue to kill feral/stray cats. Killing feral/stray cats should fall under the abuse & cruelty Federal Law.  All they did with this article is give people that do not like cats the license and even encourages inhumane treatment.  No one is doing anything about the dogs running loose (we have a leash law).

We all know killing these cats is not the answer, the only way that will cut down the amount  of feral/stray cats is mandatory spay/neuter of pets. If responsible pet owners would spay/neuter their cats there would not be such a big population of feral/stray cats to deal with. However, since there is, the best way to deal with them is TNR, not murdering cats that humans dumped because they didn't want them and they weren't spayed/neutered so they continued to have kittens.

Nederland has the City Ordnance that your required to get your pet spayed or neutered and they also have resources to help, but they need to get rid of the part of their ordnance where their citizens can't feed feral/strays and how many pets they can have.  This use to be a free country, we pay our mortgage and our property  taxes, they shouldn't be able to tell anyone how many pets they have in their own home!
