Daintree Coast community micro-grid concerns

The issue

I am a resident/business owner/supporter of renewable energy in the Daintree Coast.

Interestingly, a wide-ranging survey of ALL potential consumers about their electricity needs and preferred options has never been held.

I am concerned that the secrecy in the planning, for and funding of, the micro-grid and the selective surveys held, have not allowed due process.

I support the findings of the 2019 KPMG-GH&D report that concluded that upgrading stand-alone  systems would be a fraction of the cost,  more reliable, have less environmental impact and use less fossil energy and will not be affected by grid failures (likely in this difficult climate) than the proposed micro-grid.

I  am concerned that even if developed the proposed grid will require ongoing subsidy and that Government will be asked to take over loss making infrastructure.  In this scenario, those who have been connected may be left stranded with no electricity supply.

Unlike the proposed micro-grid, there is no chance of stand-alone systems becoming stranded assets.

I suggest that the $20M allocated to the proposed micro-grid would be better spent upgrading stand-alone residential systems and assisting the larger consumers with an appropriate solution.

I therefore ask you to redirect funding as suggested. Subject to detailed, independent expert analysis, I agree with the concept of micro-grids where the consumers are close together, allowing low voltage reticulation and can share power. For example Cow Bay turnoff, Thornton Beach and Cape Tribulation could be suitable locations.
