The Issue

The D60 food workers have had their PERA retirement benefits removed as a result of the new D60 food plan, which has privatized our schools' food sources. This decision was made in order to save money. However, the district made this decision WITHOUT properly consulting the food workers, preventing their voices from being heard. It is unjust to remove their benefits without their approval. In addition, there was a promise for improved food. As a senior in high school, I can testify that the food has remained the same if not worse. A huge injustice has occurred against the very people that feed thousands of mouths.

This petition is in favor of the workers and their retirement benefits. District 60 should NOT privatize their food source and MUST ensure that the workers' PERA benefits are returned and upheld. This new food plan is only in place for one year, and once it expires, it should NOT be renewed, in favor of the workers. The district MUST take care of its workers.

Our food workers deserve better treatment than they've been given. Staff have quit because they could not afford for their benefits to be removed. It is crucial that we unite as a community to serve the people that serve us.
