Demand the DC Bar to Refund Bar Application Fees

The Issue

In light of the D.C. Bar's announcement (https://www.dccourts.gov/court-of-appeals/committee-on-admissions) that the results of the September 2020 examination will no longer be portable to other UBE jurisdictions, we demand that the Bar provide refunds to applicants who will no longer be taking the exam. The fact that an association of lawyers does not recognize a clear breach of contract in the fact that applicants paid to take a UBE compliant exam, and are now being denied the opportunity for a refund when the exam no longer meets that important criteria, is highly concerning. Furthermore, the fact that this wrong is being committed against law students, many of whom are tens of thousands of dollars in debt and face many more financial uncertainties as the COVID-19 pandemic ravages the economy, is egregious.

We demand that the $232 application fee to the D.C. Bar be refunded to all applicants who no longer want to take the test. Furthermore, the D.C. Bar should work with the National Conference of Bar Examiners to refund the Character and Fitness Service Fee of $355 to all applicants who no longer want to take the test but who paid for it as a prerequisite for applying to the D.C. Bar.
