Increase the speed limit on UK e-bikes from 15.5 to at least 20mph (for road use 28mph)

Intro to e-bikes - Why they are here to stay

I welcome your positive remarks having had a lot of derogatory “comments” that e-bikes are cheating, they go too fast or you don’t get fit on them… It’s clear that e-bikes are here to stay… with Covid-19 proving this even more so with the huge demand with most shops out of stock and 1000s of new cyclist finding out how much fun and an enabler e-bikes are…

1.      For those less able or that struggle to keep fitness up, for the aging population to get out and explore the local countryside and for keen cyclists to travel longer distances...

2.      For enthusiastic cycling couples to enjoy riding together where one is a keen cyclist and the other an occasional rider... now they can actually ride together..

3.      For keen cyclists e-bikes don't actually go any faster than they would ride anyway... with a typical speed of 16-18 mph... e-bikes can slow you down!

Long term e-bikes will replace the car for short journeys, are the future for all local trips, with racks and baskets fitted they can carry the essentials with ease, be it for shopping or a cycling trip with the family.

The Problem - e-bikes are currently restricted to 15.5 mph (under EU law)

With the current e-bike limit this makes riding in town more dangerous with two scary problems:

1. You can't keep up with traffic which causes long queues of cars trying to overtake… with the hesitant drivers “crawling” behind you... often for miles!

2. Impatient drivers who overtake not knowing the 1.5 metre gap required by the highway code... often so close you can feel the wind pull your clothes!

The Answer - Increase the legal limit on e-bikes in the UK (as per the USA)

1.      Increase the limit to 20 MPH for current e-bikes to allow you to keep up with the flow of traffic in town...

2.      Increase the limit to 28 MPH for road e-bikers to allow them to ride at the pace of a cycling pack...

You can change this restrictive law by voting with your support…
