The issue
Please sign our petition to improve the safety of Curtin University Perth Campus at night.
Students are calling for university leaders to improve campus safety. The significance of safety on university campuses within Australia may be downplayed due to under reporting of on campus crime incidences. Sexual assaults and harassments are common to university campuses around the world.
Sexual assault and harassment can have negative implications to the person including physical and psychological consequences, which may have a long-term impact on health and wellbeing. It may cause trauma, affect academic achievement, perceptions of safety, and increase the risk of sexually transmitted infections.
We have identified a lack of adequate lighting (Particularly in outdoor walk ways & car parks) and a lack of security measure awareness as risk factors for incidents occurring at night on Curtin University’s Bentley Campus.
We also recognise that many students are not using the safety measures (EG Security service & app) & that exist at Curtin University, due to a lack of awareness and accessibility
We are advocating for the following and would greatly appreciate your support:
1. A visible increase in the amount of functional lighting around campus by the end of 2019
2. A visible increase in the number of students who use the security measures implemented by Curtin’s Safer Community team by the end of 2019.
This petition will be submitted to Curtin University in a bid to improve campus safety for all staff, students and visitors. We thank you for your support.
