Curb the Excessive Firework Displays During Bonfire Events

Curb the Excessive Firework Displays During Bonfire Events

The Issue

For many of us, bonfire nights and firework displays have escalated from a simple neighborhood festivity to a nationwide problem. This issue has become personally distressing to me and many others. In recent years, the scale of fireworks events across the nation has exploded, causing not just a cacophony but also creating a significant disruption to daily life for the elderly and our beloved pets who find the noise and the flashes of light terrifying.

Given these repercussions and the enormous amounts spent on these extravagant displays, I believe it's time we rethink our approach to celebrations. If we take a step back, we'd realize that the money used on this visual spectacle could be diverted towards pressing societal issues that desperately require funding.

A 2018 study by the American Pet Products Association estimated that 78 million dogs and 85.8 million cats are owned in the United States. Many of these pets suffer from firework phobia—a profound, persistent and excessive fear of fireworks—that often results in a distressed pet and a distressed pet owner. A continued increase in extravagant fireworks displays only amplifies this issue, causing widespread stress and anxiety.

Moreover, several pieces of research, including one from the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA), have found that loud noises, such as fireworks, can lead to significant health implications including sleep disturbances, increased heart rate, and even heart attacks among the elderly.

It's time to replace the single night of thrill that these firework displays bring with a consideration for our pets, the elderly, and thoughtful allocation of resources. Let's forward this petition to our local government representatives to ensure that our concerns are acted upon. Sign the petition today to help foster a more compassionate, considerate, and wise society tomorrow.
