Cultural Identity Recognition - Schools recognising Taonga as part of cultural identity

The issue

Tauira (Students) of Maori Heritage and whanau (families) were affected when told to remove their taonga. (Whanau, Hapu, Iwi)

Cultural disconnection, unnecessary discipline, Maori students being embarrassed about their own culture, Maori students no longer wanting to identify themselves as Maori, discrimination towards Maori students in the education sector

Students are at a vital time where cultural identity is really important and they need to be confident in who they are as Maori, especially in schools where cultural diversity and inclusion need to be practiced in Queensland
