Way too many people have died trying to cross the “Rio Bravo/Rio Grande” from Mexico to the United States. After the end of the “ wet feet, dry feet policy” on January 12, 2017, many Cubans have been driven by the oppressive Cuban regime to risk their live’s in order to achieve their dreams by coming to the United States, the Land of the Free and the Home of the brave, where the idea of the “American Dream” is sought after by thousands of people.

Carlos Jorge Tomas Reyes, a 23-year-old Cuban male, tried to cross the Rio Bravo after more than a year waiting to be admitted to the United States, without hope of ever being allowed in. Carlos Jorge is my cousin. Carlos Jorge attempted to cross the River on Wednesday, June 24th, 2020 around 3 a.m. with the ultimate goal of reaching the United States. Unfortunately, my cousin did not make it and died trying to achieve his goals and dreams. For five days we have searched and tried everything within our reach to find him. Unfortunately, we found him dead, in such a state that his body could not be preserved and buried, it needs to be incinerated. He was found downriver, in an area where even the Mexican Police of Reynosa were scared to go into to recover his body, they waited until the morning of the next day, Monday, June 29th, 2020.

My cousin’s mother, my aunt, Yomaris Reyes, and our grandma that raised him like a son, Bertha Almaguer, are desperate and without consolation after finding out about the news. This tragedy has hit our family to the core, in such a way that recovery is a long way down the road, hoping for God's strength to be able to adjust again to life without him.

His brother, Luis Carlos Tomas Reyes, is in Mexico all alone, dealing with the loss of his brother and with nobody to help or support him emotionally. He has had to find strengths, where strength is not found, in order to deal with the news and with the process of identifying and cremating his little brothers’ body. Luis Carlos is a Mexican resident, he had three court audiences to determine if he would be admitted, and they denied his entrance to the U.S.

We, as a family, are asking for help from anyone that can provide us with help, we are asking the American Government, the Cuban Government, and the Mexican Government for assistance. We are requesting a humanitarian Visa or entrance permit into the United States for Luis Carlos Tomas Reyes so that we can mourn with him and share the loss as a family. Anyone that has lost a family member knows that family support is desperately needed. Being along in a Country without a single family member and suffering through this loss, is a terrible thing to go through.

We are humbly and desperately asking that the U.S. Government allows our family to reunite and grief as it should, to be able to have my cousin’s ashes and mourn our tragic loss. My aunt, Carlo Jorge’s mother, wants to keep the ashes in her room until the day she passes away, she wants to be able to be close to her son, even if he is physically gone, she wants to be spiritually together.

The Cuban government has denied our request for an Entry Permit into the Island, stating that “they only allow Cuban nationals who are stranded after COVID19”, they dismissed out pleas to have a CUBAN NATIONAL enter his HOMECOUNTRY, to take his brother’s ashes to his mother, in Cuba. We know that this oppressive government (Cuba) does not care for its people, which is why we are asking the Government of the United States, even the President, Donald Trump if needed, to hear our plea and allow us to be together in mourning with Luis Carlos stranded in Mexico all alone. We are asking because we have hope, hope to be heard, hope be helped, hope to be united, hope to not be pushed aside, hope to be together as a family, after all, family is everything, and when a family member needs you, you have to be there for them.

Demasiadas personas han muerto tratando de cruzar el "Río Bravo/Río Grande" de México a los Estados Unidos. Tras el fin de la "política de pies secos, pies mojados" el 12 de enero de 2017, muchos cubanos han sido empujados por el opresivo régimen cubano a arriesgar sus vidas para lograr sus sueños al venir a los Estados Unidos, la Tierra de los Libres y el Hogar de los Valientes, donde la idea del "Sueño Americano" es buscada por miles de personas.
Carlos Jorge Tomás Reyes, un joven cubano de 23 años, intentó cruzar el Río Bravo después de más de un año de espera para ser admitido en los Estados Unidos, sin esperanza de que se le permitiera entrar. Carlos Jorge es mi primo. Carlos Jorge intentó cruzar el río el miércoles 24 de junio de 2020 alrededor de las 3 a.m. con el objetivo final de llegar a los Estados Unidos. Desafortunadamente, mi primo no lo logró, y murió tratando de alcanzar sus objetivos. Durante cinco días hemos buscado e intentado todo lo que está a nuestro alcance para encontrarlo. Desafortunadamente, lo encontramos muerto, en tal estado que su cuerpo no pudo ser preservado y enterrado, necesita ser incinerado. Fue encontrado río abajo, en una zona donde hasta la policía mexicana de Reynosa tenía miedo de entrar para recuperar su cuerpo, esperaron hasta la mañana del día siguiente, lunes 29 de junio de 2020.
La madre de mi primo, mi tía, Yomaris Reyes, y nuestra abuela que lo crió como a un hijo, Bertha Almaguer, están desesperadas y sin consuelo después de enterarse de la noticia. Esta tragedia ha golpeado a nuestra familia hasta la médula, de tal manera que la recuperación está a un largo camino, solo pidiéndole fuerzas a Dios para poder soportar esta perdida y la vida sin el.
Su hermano, Luis Carlos Tomas Reyes, está en México solo, lidiando con la pérdida de su hermano y sin nadie que lo ayude o apoye emocionalmente. Ha tenido que encontrar fuerzas, donde no las encuentra, para afrontar la noticia y el proceso de identificación y cremación del cuerpo de su hermano pequeño. Luis Carlos es también, tuvo tres audiencias en la corte para determinar si sería admitido, y le negaron la entrada a los EE.UU las 3 veces.
Nosotros, como familia, estamos pidiendo ayuda a cualquiera que pueda proporcionarnos asistencia, estamos pidiendo ayuda al gobierno americano, al gobierno cubano y al gobierno mexicano. Estamos solicitando una visa humanitaria o un permiso de entrada a los Estados Unidos para Luis Carlos Tomás Reyes, para poder llorar con él y compartir la pérdida como familia. Cualquiera que haya perdido a un miembro de la familia sabe que el apoyo familiar es muy necesario. Estar en un país ajeno, sin un solo miembro de la familia y sufrir por esta pérdida, es algo terrible de soportar.
Humildemente y desesperadamente pedimos que el gobierno de los Estados Unidos permita a nuestra familia reunirse y llorar como debe, para poder tener las cenizas de mi primo y llorar nuestra trágica pérdida como Dios manda. Mi tía, la madre de Carlo Jorge, quiere guardar las cenizas en su habitación hasta el día en que fallezca, quiere poder estar cerca de su hijo, incluso si se ha ido físicamente, quiere estar espiritualmente junta.
El gobierno cubano ha denegado nuestra solicitud de permiso de entrada en la isla, declarando que "sólo permiten a los nacionales cubanos que están varados después de COVID19", desestimaron nuestras súplicas para que un NACIONAL CUBANO entre a su PAÍS DE ORIGEN, para llevar las cenizas de su hermano a su madre, en Cuba. Sabemos que este gobierno opresor no se preocupa por su pueblo, por lo que pedimos al Gobierno de los Estados Unidos, incluso al Presidente, Donald Trump si es necesario, que escuche nuestra súplica y nos permita estar juntos en el duelo con Luis Carlos varado en México, solo. Lo pedimos porque tenemos esperanza, ESPERANZA de que nos escuchen, ESPERANZA de que nos ayuden, ESPERANZA de que nos unan, ESPERANZA de que no nos hagan a un lado, ESPERANZA de estar juntos como una familia, después de todo, la familia lo es todo, y cuando un miembro de la familia te necesita, tienes que estar ahí para él.
