The Issue

We are demanding private access to the video footage submitted to CTV Edmonton after our family’s story aired—footage that captures Eric’s final moments and has been concealed from us.

We, the family of Eric Omeasoo, 13,  are calling on CTV Edmonton to act with integrity and transparency by granting us access to the unedited video footage submitted by a civilian after our family’s story aired on the evening news. This footage—believed to capture Eric’s final moments—was never disclosed to us, despite ongoing interviews between CTV News Edmonton and our grieving family.

Timeline of Events and Ethical Breach

Shortly after Eric’s death, CTV Edmonton interviewed our family as we shared who Eric was—a bright, spirited 13-year-old Indigenous boy who was tragically killed at the MacEwan LRT Station.

CTV news reporter Nav Sangha later informed us they would not air the story because it “did not fit the narrative” of the Edmonton Police Service (EPS) media release.

  •  Following this, our family provided CTV with evidence proving that the EPS had not been forthright with the public. This resulted in a second interview, which aired and showed our family's search for understanding and acknowledged the discrepancies between what we were told and what was reported publicly.
  • After that story aired, a civilian submitted video footage directly to CTV Edmonton, which reportedly captures some of Eric Omeasoo’s final moments.
  • Rather than informing our family, CTV chose to conceal this footage, conversing with police about it while continuing to engage our family in interviews—never disclosing its existence.
  • The Edmonton Police Service notified our family that CTV news Edmonton submitted the footage to them, they confirmed to them it does show some of Eric’s last moments and stated they have no jurisdiction over what CTV does with the footage, meaning the ethical responsibility lies solely with CTV Edmonton.

Why This Matters

We are not asking for public release. We are requesting a private viewing of the unedited footage—to understand the truth of what happened to Eric. Denying this opportunity while using our family's grief in broadcasts is a betrayal of trust and a failure in basic journalistic ethics.

We speculate this footage was intentionally concealed because it does not align with the EPS narrative. As a grieving Indigenous family, this act feels like a silencing of truth that reinforces institutional harm.

We Demand That CTV Edmonton:

1. Acknowledge possession of the video submitted to them that captures Eric’s final moments.
2. Provide a private viewing of the unedited footage to our family.
3. Explain why the existence of this footage was concealed from us, despite ongoing engagement and interviews.
4. Publicly address the ethical violations that occurred in the handling of this evidence and our family’s trust.

Truth Matters—So Does Accountability

We ask not for spectacle, but for dignity. Eric Omeasoo was our child, our loved one. We deserve to know what happened in his final moments—not through filtered narratives, but through truth. This is about justice, morality, and the right to grieve with clarity.

Please sign and support our petition to hold CTV Edmonton accountable and to help restore the basic human dignity that has been denied to Eric’s memory and our family’s healing.
