CARE Act Fund CSUSM

The Issue

California State University San Marcos is receiving $15,963,036 million from the Federal Stimulus Bill and CSUSM has decided to round the aid to bring the total to $16 million. CSUSM is planning to ONLY provide half of the $16 million to students who fit a certain “criteria”. As students, we demand that 70% of the funding be allocated to us without a “criteria”, and that all other funding be allocated to support resources that are affected to give full student support. Resources such as student centers, tutoring spaces, academic advising, mental health, sexual violence advocates, maintenance workers, low-income professionals, and lecturers (Non-Tenure track).

It needs to be understood that not only should some students be given assistance, but all students should be provided relief because we are all affected during this pandemic. Many students are dealing with being laid off, having to work longer shifts and putting themselves at risk, having little to no income and still having to pay for bills and textbooks, filing for unemployment, struggling to find childcare, caring for relatives or close friends who are terminally ill, caring for patients within medical facilities who are terminally ill, caring for themselves being ill, sudden deaths within their family or friend circle, being denied from the student emergency fund, and many other unfortunate circumstances during this pandemic. We need to account for CSUSM student's heightened struggles during this onerous time. We are not coping in "normal" time.

Students' classes were canceled. All in-person classes were terminated when people paid specifically for in-person instruction. All students pay for extra resources such as: labs, art studios, art/dance/science supplies, class space, gym, library, infrastructure, ASI fee, student health, and counseling, etc.

While CSUSM made the right decision to terminate in-person instruction on behalf of the well-being of our students, all should be entitled to a prorated refund of the services outstanding that will no longer be rendered.
