Adam Eagle started this petition to CSUN and

Due to the extreme rise in Corona Virus cases, Social Justice Issues, Political Issues, etc there has been a spike in depression, anxiety, and stress specifically concerning for our age group. See this link for more detail: https://www.cnbc.com/2020/03/20/coronavirus-wake-up-millennials-prioritize-your-mental-health-right-now-says-psychotherapist.html

Whether we are the students sitting at home terrified to go outside, the students trying to maybe see a few friends just for some relief, the students taking care of a high risk family member, the students who lost someone in this terrible time, or even the student who just feels the weight of all the stress in the world, MANY of us are having trouble even getting through one day that feels okay. On top of that, CSUN has given a highly unreasonable amount of online assignments even as the school has only been in session for a short period of 2 weeks. The amount of time each teacher is asking for in a period where we have so much more than we ever thought there could be to deal with, even if that means mentally.

I realize reading this you may think this is created as an "excuse," but I assure you that is not the case. This is written by 2 very dedicated students with GPAs above 3.75 who really value education. I am NOT arguing for "easier work," I am arguing for less time taken from us. We are not just students, we are people, and even further, we are young adults experiencing the scariest version of our country we've been around to witness.

Many of us don't even have much time of our own right now at all. With financial issues, mental health issues, loss, etc. Shouldn't college be a way to escape all that is happening and an opportunity for us to simply learn and focus on our futures as opposed to an additional manifestation of stress, worry, and late night hours? I think it's important to note for the past week and a half 2 of us have spent about 7 hours on school a day!?

I don't want to state a problem without suggesting a solution so here it is:

1. Provide shorter YouTube videos as opposed to long zoom lectures that happen at a designated time we may not be able to weekly maintain.

2. Allow video submissions on assignments that usually would be required at a live designated time.

3. Keep the due date and release date consistent so we can do our best on our end to get everything in on time for all classes. For example, all work should be assigned Monday morning and due Sunday night for all of our classes so we always know the due dates.

4. Know that your class is definitely not the most pressing matter for a lot of us. Every teacher wants their class to be the priority, and while school is extremely important, there is SO much happening now that that is simply impossible.

5. Be empathetic, flexible, and aware. Please stop acting as if the worst thing that happened lately is your class moving to online. Online classes pre-existed Corona Virus! Our concerns are elsewhere.

6. Understand we are not kids you have to assign work to, we are paying members of an educational institution. By now, it is OUR choice to be here. We are here because we WANT to learn. I say this due to the extreme and excess amount of "syllabus quizzes" and "lecture discussions" and "reading checks." Our assignments should not be based on reading everything, they should be based on actively learning. Give us fun videos or games or discussions, or even essays. Don't give a long lecture on zoom followed by a slide lecture with several discussions and a reading assignment. This is the secret: we feel more inspired to do the work and learn when we feel less like we need to prove so much and there's a smaller number of really thought provoking assignments as opposed to a ton of easier tedious assignments that take HOURS.

Thank you SO much for reading all of this because THAT probably felt like a long assignment. Please sign this and help us fight for college to be a learning escape to plan for our future as opposed to a dark void of endless work only hardening the terrifying and stress-evoking aspects of the present.
